A home cold plunge can cost under $2,000 or more than $12,000. The biggest price jump is the chiller: it keeps water cold and filtered without buying ice. We compared five popular options on temperature, size, sanitation, power needs, warranty and price.

Buying guide: what actually matters
1. Chiller or ice?
Ice is cheap to start but tedious every day. A chiller keeps water at a set temperature and usually filters it too. If you plan to plunge most days, a chiller is what makes the habit stick.
2. Temperature
Most chillers reach about 37–39°F. Lower numbers sound impressive, but most people plunge somewhere in the 40s–50s°F.
3. Sanitation
Look for ozone and a proper filter. Without them you’ll be changing the water far more often.
4. Power and placement
Most home chillers want a dedicated 120V circuit. Check where it will go, how far it is from an outlet, and whether the unit is rated for outdoor use where you live.
5. Warranty and returns
Chillers are the part most likely to need service. Read the chiller warranty separately from the tub warranty.
FAQ
How cold should a cold plunge be?
Many people start around the mid-50s°F and go colder gradually. Follow the maker’s guidance and listen to your body.
Can I put a cold plunge indoors?
Yes. Plunge and Ice Barrel models are rated for indoor use; plan for water spills and access to a dedicated outlet.
Is an ice-only tub worth it?
It’s the cheapest way to start. If you end up plunging daily, a model with a chiller port (like the Ice Barrel 500) lets you upgrade later.
Important: Cold water immersion can be risky. This guide is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your doctor first if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, Raynaud’s or are pregnant. Never plunge alone or for longer than you can tolerate.
